For Japanese Who Want to Work Abroad, and Foreigners Who Want to Work in Japan | Red Look Online Community

A P2P online community where Japanese who want to work abroad and foreigners who want to work in Japan meet, teach each other, and build true self-driving capability together. Operated by the nonprofit organization Red Look, creating a system that makes global challenges accessible to everyone—not just a privileged few.

— Making Global Challenges More Accessible, Starting from Home

Summary: Three Reasons Why Red Look Is Chosen

  1. Real self-driving capability built through mutual teaching (P2P design)
  2. A “48-hour promise” so no one is left alone (staff support)
  3. NPO-based pricing that makes it possible to keep going
(JPY 980/month for the first 30 members, then JPY 1,500)

※ All revenue is reinvested into sustaining and strengthening community operations and supporting the next generation of challengers.

“Someday, I want to work abroad.”
“I want to speak English and be active internationally.”
“I want to test my skills on a global stage.”

When we hold these dreams, a thick wall of reality often stands in front of us.
Language acquisition, real on-the-ground information, places to practice output, and the absence of someone to consult.
Above all, the biggest issue is money.

Currently, the cost of one year of language study in Europe or North America is said to reach JPY 3–5 million, partly due to the weak yen (*1).
Faced with these costs, around 60% of young people in Japan give up on overseas challenges for financial reasons, influenced by the “lost 30 years” of long-term economic stagnation and declining international standing (*2).

While Japanese youth are increasingly losing opportunities for international experience due to financial constraints, the situation for foreigners who see potential in Japan and want to work here is also severe.
Although the employment rate for Japanese students exceeds 90%, about half of international students abandon their dreams without receiving job offers (*3).

As an NPO, Red Look decided to address these two imbalances as one of our core initiatives.

That strong intention led us to take our first step:
launching an online community connecting Japanese who want to work abroad and foreigners who want to work in Japan.

A “Third Option”: Not One-Off Events, Not Expensive Schools, and Not Just the Internet

Today, learning opportunities are everywhere.
Ask AI and you get correct answers. Open YouTube and you can see daily life abroad.
Recently, language exchange events on platforms like VRChat have also become popular.

Compared to the past, input opportunities are richer than ever—and they will continue to grow.

What is critically lacking, however, is
a safe place where people can produce output together, receive advice from experienced role models, and interact with real humans.

We have listened to many challengers over the years:

  • “I joined one-off networking events, but relationships ended there.”
  • “I enrolled in an expensive school, but the curriculum was too fast and I eventually dropped out.”
  • “Support stayed within the 教材 scope; there was no personalized career guidance.”
  • “I wanted ongoing support, but nothing was considered beyond graduation.”

Above all, if you cannot continue, you cannot improve.
In a world full of distractions like social media, continuing alone with focus is extremely difficult.

We also heard this repeatedly:
Schools provide a learning environment, but once you step outside, that environment disappears.
Especially students attending language schools to find jobs locally said what they learned did not directly connect to employment.

That is why Red Look chose not just a “course,” but
a side-by-side, ongoing community that benefits both Japanese and foreigners, supported by staff with overseas experience.

Mutual Teaching Builds the Strongest Self-Driving Capability

The biggest feature of the Red Look online group is its P2P (peer-to-peer) design, where everyone becomes both teacher and learner.

We envision flows like these:

  • A Japanese member aiming for overseas employment asks—in English—about writing an English resume.
→ A foreign member aiming to work in Japan reviews it.
→ The Japanese member then explains differences in Japanese job applications.

  • A foreign member wanting to work in Japan shares concerns—in Japanese—about unique interview etiquette.
→ A Japanese member offers advice through chat or online calls, based on real experience.
→ The foreign member shares interview differences from their home country.

By explaining one’s own knowledge and culture to someone else, language output naturally increases and cross-cultural communication deepens.
Because conversations are driven by real questions and answers—not small talk like “Where are you from?”—participants engage in flexible, realistic communication.

Through this process, self-driving capability is developed.
For example, within three months, members may be able to write resumes in Japanese or English, proactively DM overseas contacts, or prepare for international relocation without hesitation.

No special skills are required.
A common question we hear from Japanese participants is:
“I can’t speak English well—what could I possibly teach foreigners?”

The answer: a lot.
What feels ordinary to you—Japanese resumes, interview responses, workplace norms—can be invaluable textbooks for foreigners seeking work in Japan.

Of course, building such an environment solely through participants is difficult.

Red Look has operated communities in Canada, Japan, and Germany, hosting over 150 events and engaging with more than 1,500 participants.
Through this, we have continuously faced questions of culture and employment pathways for foreigners.

Using this experience, we are gathering people with overseas experience and strong motivation—those who truly want to thrive globally and support others—to build this P2P design together.

The “48-Hour Promise”: No One Is Left Alone, Turning Failure into Growth

The greatest enemy of online communities is undoubtedly loneliness.

When a brave question receives no response, people start doubting themselves.
That moment can extinguish the desire to challenge.

Failure is the foundation of success.
What matters is having support after failure.

At Red Look, to ensure no one is left alone, we implement a “48-hour safety net”:

  • A culture of mutual support among members
  • Questions unanswered for 48 hours are followed up by staff
  • Inappropriate expressions, mistakes, or misleading advice are corrected by staff

Our staff specialize in careers, language, and mental support—and all are “senior challengers” with real overseas experience.
Their advice is not theoretical, but grounded in lived experience—something AI still struggles to replicate.

Starting Small — Because We Are an NPO

“Why put in so much effort to operate at such a low cost?”

The reason is simple.
We value maximizing meaningful global experiences over profit.

Instead of a high-priced business that benefits only a few, we offer a starting line at JPY 980/month (first 30 members, then JPY 1,500), enabling young people to begin their global journey.

Community Overview

  • Age Range: 18–35 (others negotiable)
  • Languages: Japanese, English
  • Platform: Discord
  • Fee: JPY 980/month (first 30 members), then JPY 1,500

All revenue is reinvested into sustaining operations and supporting future challengers.

As an NPO, our mission is to fill gaps where public systems cannot reach—especially in an increasingly diverse society.
By collaborating with governments, companies, and educational institutions, we aim to open doors to international opportunities unreachable by individuals alone.
